Professional ASL Interpreters:

It's more than just a game of telephone.

A professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter in a white blazer facilitating a conversation between two colleagues in a modern office setting.

In the states of Missouri and Illinois, an ASL Interpreter must hold a license and certification that qualifies them to work in specific settings as determined by state law. All interpreters must adhere to all applicable state laws, and ethical statutes to maintain their licensure.

Their primary role is to facilitate communication and culturally mediate between an Deaf/Hard of Hearing ASL user and others. The interpreter will work with all parties involved to accomplish the goals of your encounter by relaying everything being said or signed. Sometimes, interpreters use specific jargon, or make choices about how they do their job that can be confusing. We recommend asking the Deaf/Hard of Hearing ASL user directly for clarification as they are generally knowledgeable about using interpreters. Our interpreters are always happy to do everything possible to ensure clear communication.
